What is a Kettlebell?
A Kettlebell is an old Russian weight-training device that looks like a metal bowling ball with a thick, sausage shaped handle protruding from it. Its unique shape creates an off-centered environment for the user, challenging the entire body simultaneously and synergistically, instead of just one or two muscle groups. The bells we use at our school range in size from 8 kg up to 48 kg. This is totally different from traditional weightlifting! While traditional weightlifting is based on a bodybuilding paradigm, Kettlebell training revolves around developing functional or tactical strength.
What is a Kettlebell fitness workout like?
The majority of Kettlebell exercises are ballistic in nature, which means that the bell is swung rather than merely lifted. As a result, the exercises take the user through multiple vectors, challenging the user's muscles through a wider range of motion. Keeping the Kettlebell in constant motion also allows the user to achieve incredible strength while simultaneously developing intense cardio.
Who trains with Kettlebells?
Anyone who wants to build functional strength will benefit from Kettlebell training. The roster of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No Holds Barred, and full contact fighters that have switched to Kettlebell training is already huge and continues to grow with each day. The U.S. Secret Service, the FBI, and many elite armed forces and SWAT teams already make extensive use of Kettlebell training for their operatives.
Also, because Kettlebell training allows you to develop cardio and strength simultaneously, people who are pressed for time can achieve a real full body workout in as little as 10 minutes!
Is Kettlebell Training Only for the Elite?
Although many elite athletes and law enforcement agencies have recognized the benefits of Kettlebell training and have made it the staple of their workouts, the answer to the question is NO. Kettlebell training benefits can help anyone who wants to help himself or herself.
Kettlebell training is extreme but not just for the elitist. At the 1995 Russian Championship the youngest contestant was 16, the oldest 53! And we are talking elite competition here; the range is even wider if you are training for yourself rather than for the gold. Dr. Krayevskiy, the father of the kettlebell sport, took up training at the age of forty-one and twenty years later he was said to look fresher and healthier than at forty.
The unique thing about a Kettlebell is it will give you the results you want, regardless of your goals. If you want to melt fat, it will. If you want it to give you better flexibility, it will. If you want it to make you lean and muscular, it will. Kettlebell training will increase your strength and flexibility. It is an amazing hand held gym that will increase your physical fitness, regardless of your starting point.
Will It Make Me Look Like a Bodybuilder?
No, but you can build a more statuesque physique, more lean and muscular. Kettlebell training is a plyometric style of training focusing in on "core" muscle groups, not bodybuilding. This allows for the increase in strength and flexibility without adding the bulk.
What is "Kettlebell Sport"?
There is a competitive sport in the Russian republics using Kettlebells, which are called Girya in Russian. People who lift Kettlebells are Gireviks (Kettlebell Lifters), and the sport is known as Girevoy Sport (G.S.) or Kettlebell Sport in English. The commonest style of competition involves 2 lifts. First the double Kettlebell jerk, then the snatch. The competitor cleans two KBs to his shoulders, then sees how many times he can jerk them overhead, up and back down to his shoulders, without putting them down, within 10 minutes. They have a rest for an hour, and then see how many times they can snatch a KB overhead during another 10 minutes. They do it first with one arm then the other. The number of snatches from the weaker arm is added to the number of jerks from the first event, giving the score. For competitions these guys use 32kg steel hollow professional grade Kettlebells... hmm... 101 snatches with a 32 anyone?... this is one tough sport.
However, only 8.8% of top Russian Gireviks, members of the Russian National Team and regional teams, reported injuries in training or competition (Voropayev, 1997). A remarkably low number, especially if you consider that these are elite athletes who push their bodies over the edge. Many hard men with high mileage have overcome debilitating injuries with kettlebell training (get your doctor's approval). Acrobat Valentin Dikul fell and broke his back at seventeen. Today, in his mid-sixties, he juggles 180-pound balls and breaks powerlifting records!
